Since 2005, the Russian government has pursued ambitious programs to
modernize its education system, with particular attention to higher
education and internationalization. Russia has introduced a universal
state exam, EGE, for college admission; established elite research and
federal universities by providing them with additional funding;
allowed for private business and research universities to grow, and
actively joined the Bologna Process, etc. Has Russia attained its
goal? Have these reforms been successful? How will these impact
Russia, CEE/CIS, and Europe?

Panelists include:
Alexander Karp, Teachers College,Columbia University
Ben Eklof, Indiana University
Harley Balzer, Georgetown University
Mark Johnson, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Iveta Silova, Lehigh University

This event is co-sponsored by the Harriman Institute and Teachers College.
This event is free and open to the public.

Call for Paper Proposals

CIES Eurasia SIG will be hosting two panel sessions at the annual
meeting in Montreal in May 2011. The SIG invites papers that engage
with questions related to education transformations in

issues that emerge in researching post-socialist education
transformations, as well as submissions related to theoretical
developments in post-socialist transformation research.

The SIG is also looking for current members to serve as proposal
reviewers. Please contact SIG Co-Chairs, Iveta Silova
(ism207@lehigh.edu) or Erin Weeks-Earp

II. Conference Theme

“Globalizing Curriculum across University Disciplines”

All levels of educational organizations address globalization forces and modify their curriculum to reflect the new knowledge and understanding of the interconnected and interdependent world.

Midwest Regional CIES Conference participants are encouraged to discuss the wide range of educational issues that arise across university, as well as all K-12 school, disciplines because of internationalization and globalization in education. This conference will provide a comprehensive forum for educators to share ideas and innovative practices in different disciplinary fields which help students develop their understanding of a globalizing world, the interconnectedness of education systems, job markets, economics, and politics. Theorists and practitioners are invited to discuss how education, at all levels, can address the current demands of the globalizing education, job, and economic markets. Students are encouraged to voice their visions, ideas, and understanding of the role that education plays and should play in their preparation as highly qualified professionals, successful individuals, and global citizens.

Proposals not directly related to the conference theme may also be submitted for consideration.
